PhilippinePhilippine senators call on government to step up crackdown on illegal online gambling

Philippine Senator Gatchalian has urged the Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) to take tougher measures to prevent foreigners involved in illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) from entering the country and conducting more illegal businesses.

According to Business World, Gatchalian emphasized the importance of the Immigration Bureau, stating that it should serve as an effective gateway to combat criminals who seek to use the Philippines for illegal activities. He also highlighted the ease with which these individuals move between POGOs despite immigration regulations.

According to a report by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in October last year, POGO-related crimes, including human trafficking, had victimized more than 4,000 people in the first half of last year.

Gatchalian proposed a resolution to permanently ban such businesses, noting that despite their criminal links, these businesses continue to be licensed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

Despite these problems, PAGCOR and some politicians still support offshore gaming, emphasizing the revenue the industry brings to the country and the jobs it creates.

PAGCOR announced plans to privatize 45 of its casinos in the third quarter of 2025, which is expected to bring in significant revenue. The move is seen as making up for some 2.2 billion pesos ($38.2 million) in unpaid dues lost to the state by shuttered offshore gaming companies.
